Foam or plywood sub-roadbed

Now at the risk of raising an eyebrow or two, here is a question for you experts.

If 3/4 5 layer plywood and 2" foam are about the same price (and they are if you watch for specials on plywood), then why would you ever use foam?

Portability is the only reason I can see.

Pro Foam

  • Lighter

Pro Plywood

  • Stronger
  • Flatter/Smoother
  • Quieter
  • Easier to wire Staples etc easier to feed 24 gauge wire through
  • Easier to mount tortoise or Peco switch motors
  • Holds a track nail
  • Looks better if not painted
  • More durable

Just curious
